Common Post-natal Symptoms

WRIST

Why do some mothers have numbness or pain of thumb and hands after delivery ?

Wrist and thumb pain after delivery is very common. There are a few causes .
1. Excessive swelling during pregnancy puts pressure on the nerves in the wrist . This causes numbness in the whole hands on both sides.
2. Poor breastfeeding postures puts pressure on the thumb and wrist muscles leading to irritation of the thumb tendons . This is called de quervains.
Is it normal? Do they need treatment . What happens if they don’t have treatment ?
⁃ This is not normal and you need treatment to take the pressure off the muscles and tendons so they can heal
⁃ If the healing does not occur, then you may get to the point where it is painful and difficult to look after your baby and do simple tasks such as picking them up
⁃ If the wrist and thumb gets too painful and there is too much swelling, a cortisone injection into the wrist may be recommended by a doctor.

HEADACHES

Why do mums get headaches and dizziness post natal?

Headaches and dizziness post natal can be due to a few reasons
-One reason is poor sitting and breastfeeding posture putting pressure on the joints in the neck . This can then cause a headache.
-Looking after baby and breastfeeding is very tiring and women often do not take enough care of themselves - they don’t drink enough water, they don’t sleep enough, they don’t rest enough which creates fatigue and exhaustion and sometimes dizziness when standing up quickly or changing positions.

LOWER BACK PAIN

Why is Lower back pain common post natal ?
Lower back pain is common post birth due to a few reasons
1. Abdominal separation and poor abdominal tone from pregnancy
2. Weakness in gluteal muscles that protect the pelvis
3. Poor pelvic positions from weakness and body postures of pregnancy
4. Caring for the baby with poor postures such as poor sitting, lifting , standing and carrying positions.
